Tacen’s Analysis: How AI Changes Crypto Marketing

The recent proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT’s text generator, and DALL-E’s image generator, as well as the rapidly growing number of competitors, has reshaped the Internet faster than most people anticipated. The sudden appearances of these tools led to a series of crises across various industries, as artists find themselves competing with computer-generated art, academics struggle to catch students who use AI to write homework assignments, and journalists fight against deep fakes and false identities created out of thin air by AI.

Not everything is doom and gloom, though. Plenty of people are finding the sudden appearance of AI tools to be an exciting development. Sure, AI can be frightening to some, but plenty of people find it to be fun, lively, and creative – and it is putting content creation within reach for countless people who struggled to make graphics, write copy, or perform other tasks that can be augmented by AI.

But how will AI impact the cryptocurrency space? It’s easy to imagine AI-driven trading and NFT creation, but how about AI-driven marketing?

To put this to the test, we asked one of the most popular AI text generators to complete a series of marketing tasks that any given cryptocurrency company might find themselves doing.

Us: Write a tweet that discusses Project TXA's hybrid decentralized exchange (hDEX) and why it is better than the competition.

AI: Check out @Project_TXA's hDEX - the hybrid decentralized exchange that combines the best of both centralized and decentralized exchanges. Get the speed and liquidity of a centralized exchange with the security and trust of a decentralized one! #hDEX #Cryptocurrency #Trading

Us: Now translate that tweet into Spanish.

Us: Now write a reply to that pretending to be someone who discovered Project TXA for the first time.

AI: Hey @Project_TXA, I just heard about you and your hDEX. I'm really intrigued by this hybrid exchange that combines the best of both centralized and decentralized exchanges. It sounds like it could be a great way to get the speed and liquidity of a centralized exchange while still having the security and trust of a decentralized one. Can you tell me more about hDEX and how it works? #hDEX #Cryptocurrency #Trading

As you can see, AI-generated copy isn’t too bad. It has a hard time pretending to be a real person, but that’s to be expected. We think that a talented human writer can outperform an AI in terms of the quality of written content – at least for now – but AI can outperform human writers in terms of the quantity of written content by leaps and bounds. Add in the ability for AI tools to create graphics, and we see a potent and dangerous mix.

WHY IS THIS DANGEROUS?

Any tool can be dangerous in the wrong hands, and AI is no different. A cryptocurrency project can fake having a larger team than they really have, tasking just one person with using different AI tools to create written content, select AI-generated graphics to pair with them, and pushing it out via blog posts and social media posts.

Combine this with AI-generated social media accounts and bot farms, and we can envision a successful astroturfing campaign that tricks actual humans into thinking a project is vastly more popular than it really is.

Artificial Intelligence is a tool, just like any other. Cryptocurrency companies must exercise great restraint in ensuring that AI is used as a tool to augment what they are already doing, and not as a tool to replace what they should be doing. Recklessness here could lead to a sort of arms race, as crypto companies attempt to out-do each other with increasing amounts of AI-generated content.

For the average person, this will not be a pleasant experience. Imagine a tidal wave of marketing tweets sweeping across your feed, with no end in sight.
